Healing Separation is about acknowledging the times in history—and in our present—where evil has tried to divide us. Growing up in the South during segregation, Qualls witnessed the cruelty of "othering." Seeing those same tactics return today, this painting stands as a deeply intentional act of remembering those dark instances—because it is only through remembering that we can truly prevent future harm and begin to heal.
Though we cannot return to the past to undo what was done, we can choose to actively repair and mend our relationships in the present. Featuring a striking divided structure, the two halves of the canvas inch closer to one another, offering hope that restoration is within our reach—and that we can mend our bonds to a point where they can no longer be torn apart, for we are one.
