Drawing directly from her previous career as a therapist, Qualls often advised her clients to "let your feelings and moods roll in and roll out like the fog." This painting serves as a visual manifestation of that practice.
Carmel Moods is an exploration of the transience of emotion. By observing how the fog layers throughout the day before eventually clearing, Qualls reminds us that nature is our greatest teacher. She encourages us to allow our internal "weather" to float by rather than "pouring our moods into concrete." Because just like the fog, even our darkest moods will eventually clear.
