The inspiration for this work came from a story shared with Patricia by a friend: a mother who, driven by pure instinct, climbed across the border to reach her daughter, who was struggling with postpartum depression. It was a simple, desperate act of a mother running toward her child’s suffering—a force of nature that no physical wall could contain.
In this large-scale work, Qualls replaces the cold, divisive concept of a "border wall" with a barrier built from the most resilient substance we know: Love. The 72 x 60-inch canvas serves as a monument to maternal devotion and our shared humanity. Through layers of texture, the painting captures the urgency and the "spirited" bravery required to cross boundaries for those we love. It is a profound reminder that behind every headline is a human story, and that the strongest walls are those we build to protect one another.
