Based in Carmel Valley, Tatiana Cabrera is a first-generation Mexican American artist whose work is a way of making sense of the world, defined by two distinct styles: her landscapes and her "Visual Monologues."
Tatiana paints California landscapes out of deep reverence, knowing ultimately that the land is not hers. As a first-generation Mexican American, her work explores themes of impermanence, gratitude, and belonging. "Because I own no soil and live on borrowed land, I paint from a deep awareness of constant change—holding my surroundings tightly through my work, knowing I am not guaranteed the same view tomorrow." Her subject matter captures California's soft terrain—an environment both magnificently overwhelming and deeply grounding—guided by a simple philosophy: "To open myself to the land I love, honor it, and ask only for it to hold me."
Her "Visual Monologues," unlike her landscapes, are where she lets her subconscious run wild with questions. Her process is intuitive, treating each piece like a puzzle she must solve. "As I paint, I often focus on a specific topic to resolve," Tatiana says. "With every shape, line, and dab of color, I’m subconsciously working to solve a question. The painting communicates its needs to me, and in turn, I gain clarity. When I step back, it’s like a Rorschach test or Tarot cards—what I see in the piece is the answer."
