Tatiana Cabrera USA, b. 1998
121.92 x 121.92 cm
A part of Tatiana Cabrera’s Visual Monologues series, this piece began as a meditation on human fragility—a reflection on how easily the physical body can be hurt. However, as Cabrera neared the end of her process, the work offered a defiant counter-argument. Stepping back, she discovered a triumphant scene of beings holding a banner, evoking images of wars won both on the battlefield and within the mind.
The composition is built upon a "spiritual history" of raw charcoal loops and scratched textures. Rather than representing weakness, these marks serve as a record of the mental and physical hurdles we survive. The translucent washes of paint allow these scars to remain visible, suggesting that true resilience is not the absence of damage, but the integration of it.
Anchored by a bold orange banner—a symbol of vitality and renewal—We Are Resilient captures the moment of "ascent." It is an answer to the artist’s inquiry into fragility, signaling that despite our physical delicacy, we possess an innate capacity to survive and continue forward. It is a celebration of the strength that we gain amid the struggle.
